Natsu Matsuri 2011

Another year, another festival, another successful event; as Natsu Matsuri chairman, I get to experience what a truly group effort this is. From the pre-festival planning, through the all day labor on the day of the festival, I marvel at how our community works as one.

There are many individuals responsible for the success of Natsu Matsuri, and fearing I will forget to mention someone, I will thank the various groups who helped. Those who led these groups have my deepest gratitude.

We served 850 chicken dinners. This would not have been possible without the outstanding work of “Team Teriyaki”. From the Saturday preparation, thru the Sunday cooking, this group met the challenge and cooked the best chicken ever.

Of course, chicken wasn’t the only dish we served. The hard work of many volunteers, throughout Saturday and starting early Sunday morning, gave our guests the opportunity to enjoy inari, chirashi, udon and ohagi. Yet, the festival was more than just food.

The BTC craft group made a wonderful selection of gift items available both for sale and as a silent auction. In addition, the beautiful quilt created for auction raised almost eight hundred dollars. Festivalgoers could also participate in a haiku contest, woodcarving and origami. Both of BTC’s taiko groups performed and there was a demonstration of Kyu Do, Japanese archery. An informative exhibit of samurai armor and swords added a cultural touch, and Rev. Patti once again gave her “Taste of Chicago Buddhism” talks.

Throughout the weekend, dedicated volunteers helped with all aspects of the festival. No job was too difficult, or too menial, for someone not to jump in and do it. Of course, there were glitches; nothing this big ever goes off without some problems. However, as problems arose, someone would also step forward to help.

Natsu Matsuri 2011 once again displayed the power of sangha. Acting as one, with a common cause, we are capable of anything.

In oneness,
With gassho,
